OUR HISTORY

On September 4th 1926, construction of the original Banner building in Youngstown, Ohio was completed. Construction and financing were provided by John S. Abel of New Castle Pa. Upon his graduation from the University of Notre Dame and Duquesne University, his son Edward J. Abel headed a building products company that included the manufacturing of the Banner Mahoning Coal furnace and distribution of various building and HVAC supplies. The name Banner Supply originated from the fact that they supplied parts for Banner brand furnaces. The business slowly grew locally with the distribution of slate roofing and even nationwide with the distribution of casted furnace parts made in the on-premise foundry.

Edward J Abel Jr. and Richard W Abel, sons of Edward J. Abel joined the company after competing educations in the 1960’s.  Edward Jr graduated from the University of Notre Dame and served in the U.S. Marine Corp for 3 years as a Captain.  Richard W. Abel graduated from the University of Notre Dame and Xavier University with an MBA. He completed 6 years of college teaching at Franciscan University and Ohio University.

The two brothers grew the company to be one of the largest roofing supply houses in northeastern Ohio. They established more locations in Warren Ohio, Cleveland Ohio, Akron Ohio and Pittsburgh Pa.  Banner Supply company was the first to offer rooftop delivery service to the trade using cranes and conveyor trucks.

In 1995, Richard E. Abel (Rich), son of Richard W Abel, joined the company after completing his education. He graduated from Florida Atlantic University and Youngstown University with an MBA.

Rich has grown the company with his promotion of vinyl siding, decking products and dumpster rentals. In 2006, Jared Wires, husband of Kerry Abel (daughter of Richard W Abel) joined the management team as IT director. He completed his education at Baldwin Wallace University and Case -Western Reserve with an MS in Management Information Systems.  He had previously worked in the Pharmaceutical industry. Both Rich and Jared have children that are interested in the further growth of the company as the fifth generation will continue the Banner tradition.

Banner Supply is a proud member of the Nemeon buying group, which has supported them with their unprecedented growth during the 2000’s. Banner Supply is also a proud member of the Mahoning Valley HBA.
